Situated Learning: Close Encounter of the Third Kind

Several themes have been strangely repeating over and over recently.

This early morning in Alterra, I talked to Nicolas about my dissertation. To him, conceptualizing campuses as entities that encourage encounters with CoPs, was not ambitious enough. He believed we need to redesign learning by challenging the curriculum and the conventional educational…

Neighborhood Segregation

Cities continue to experience high levels of residential segregation based on discriminatory real estate practices, zoning ordinances, and mortgage structures (Low 2009). Residents of middle-class and upper middle-class neighborhoods often cordon themselves off as a class by building fences, cutting off relationships with neighbors, and moving out in response to problems and conflicts. At the same time, governments have expanded their…

Discourse of Desperation: Review on Mike Davis's City of Quartz

The core idea of Davis’s argument can be summarized in this statement: The distortion of conceptual shared space is followed by the destruction of architectural and physical public space. Davis narrates how the public's conceptualization of space is harshly invaded…

container vs. aluminum shed

There's a pole barn on craiglist (for FREE) that might suit our tire storage needs at the artery.  Anyone interested in dismantling and reconstructing this in late October?  Perhaps we invest our 5k grant into a constructive community building opportunity?  This may be an alternative to the steel box.

What if the artery set + met the standard of the Living Building Challenge?

It defines the most…

A brilliant idea for South Sudan by fellow beintweener, NJ Unaka.

When the Republic of South Sudan gained independence, the universities were left with few resources. For instance, there are only two architecture books left at the University of Juba. We have secured a donation of books from a benefactor and promises of…

sam's first egg (almost)

today i noticed sam looking particularly large and a bit sluggish.  it was time yet again to clean their coop, and so i let both she and biscuit run around the yard.  as i was breaking it down, i noticed sam not on her feet munching on the greens with biscuit.  instead she was parked in the shade.  when she did stand up, i noticed a yolky discharge on the ground.  next it was time to stow biscuit in the temporary rabbit holding cage because she was getting a lil too frisky with sam's hind…

a healthy and happy pair of hens.

i'm back in the mke after a sojourn to the eu, scandinavia, and the uk.  it was an amazing trip, thanks to my friend, and our fellow beintweener, jeff haneline.  we did a lot of legwork on this tour and met some super (attractive) strangers along the way.  after a week back in town, i'm getting settled back in, with some notion of routine.  i also feel healthy and happy to be home.  the girls are getting real talkative and enjoying some produce beyond their standard 'grower' feed.  they have…

do chickens need a bath?

it is nice to give them a bath every once in a while especially if they get into mud or are carrying lice.  Make sure to check them frequently.  There is a dust that you can put on them to prevent mites and lice.

If you want to bathe them that is nice and can help them stay healthy and happy.  Do not bathe too much though.  Once in spring and fall, and twice in summer is acceptable.

Fill up 3 or 4 5 gallon buckets of warm water.  Put DAWN soap…
